Good News for Giving Back! Week Ending, 23rd August

Cher and Cher Alike...

What would you do if your doorbell rang and it was award-winning musical artist Cher, dressed in a postal worker's uniform with your parcel asking 'can you sign for this?' Well, that is exactly what Cher is trying to do. She contacted two postal services in her home town of Malibu and asked if they take volunteers. She was told 'no, we'd need your fingerprints and a background check'. The US postal service is in a bit of a pickle in the lead-up to the general election, so Cher wanted to volunteer to do her bit to help people vote because apparently a large percentage of democrats vote by mail. Cher was arrested when she was 13, so whether or not she'll get to volunteer is uncertain. Either way, it might be better for everyone if they donned their facemasks and got down to their local school or church polling office.

Volunteering Officially Improves Productivity at Work

I've always expounded the mental health benefits of volunteering and, depending on what you do, it can also add to your physical health if you choose to do something that exerts the body. It has now been posed that volunteering alongside work also improves your workplace productivity. A study showed that volunteering improves your life at work in four ways; it reduces stress, decreases anxiety, develops your professional skills and improves overall productivity. I heartily agree with all of this, and believe that all employers should give their staff time to volunteer. They might get back even more than they expect.

Fresh Foodbank Gives Away 500kg of Fresh Food in Two Hours

I'm a bit of a fan of our local MP, Siobhain McDonagh. She's a regular feature at the local foodbank in Pollards Hill (where I gave away 168 tomato plants back in May) and she's very active within the community in making sure that her constituents are well-cared for, no matter what the challenge is. The foodbank in Pollards Hill has recently changed somewhat in that they are focussing a lot more on fresh food and delivering a really positive health message to the people who need to use the foodbank. It's 100% run by volunteers and I am continually amazed and humbled by the commitment of the volunteers. You can read more about the Fresh Foodbank and follow them on Instagram HERE.
