Today was a Shout day, as I also have another regular commitment in the diary. The Platform has remained busy, and I'm getting a lot of experience at the moment, and I'm feeling really at home in the platform

What: Crisis Volunteering
Organisation: Shout 85258

The surge in people needing to talk to someone in the last few days has not died down, since Boris made the announcement and everyone went into Tier 5. I remember during the first lockdown that I was yearning for Brexit talk just to get away from the death and destruction that the coronavirus was leaving in its wake. Right now, whenever you turn the news on, you can either find either lockdown talk or Trump and his followers frothing at the mouth and inciting violence. I’m starting to miss Brexit talk again…

I love volunteering for Shout because it feels like you are genuinely helping people. You can quite literally sense when you have talked someone down from being in a really difficult place because you ride that journey with them. I’ve just signed-up to be a volunteer counsellor with Childline as well because I think the two will really complement one another. The induction session for that is booked-in for later this month, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Every Wednesday, I’ve been doing an Incredible Years Parenting Programme with Merton Early Years because my son has autism and language delays. We're really lucky that he's able to go to school at the moment, despite the Covid restrictions, because he has an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP) and I'm able to do this course to learn strategies to help him develop his language skills. My son goes to a mainstream school with a specialist autism unit, and his teachers are amazing. I'm waiting for the teacher appreciation movement to really kick in, as despite the fact that most people have been home schooling their kids for almost a year, there hasn't been the appreciation for teachers that there really ought to be. Their job is not easy, and I am thankful every day that there is a strong team that can give my son the structured environment he really needs.
